Tokenized Assets Remain Unfamiliar to 89% of Americans, New Survey Shows

Tokenization

A new Ipsos survey finds 89% of Americans know little about tokenized assets, highlighting a major public awareness gap.

Only 3% of Americans say they are very familiar with tokenized assets, according to a new Ipsos survey. Meanwhile, 89% have little or no knowledge about this emerging financial technology. The results reveal a significant lack of awareness among financial institutions about blockchain-based services.

Ipsos Survey Reveals Low Awareness of Tokenized Assets

Ipsos carried out the survey on behalf of the DeFi Education Fund (DEF). The results, which will be released in October 2026, indicate that a majority of Americans are still not familiar with tokenization.

According to the survey, 69% of respondents were not at all familiar with tokenized assets. An additional 20% reported that they were not very familiar with the technology. These groups account for 89% of respondents.

Meanwhile, just 2% indicated they were very familiar with tokenized assets. An additional 1% said they were very familiar. Additionally, 6% reported having some knowledge of the technology.

These statistics reveal that there is a limited awareness of tokenized assets. The findings also point to a chance for companies creating financial products on blockchain.

Tokenization involves converting ownership rights of real-world assets into digital tokens. These assets may be stocks, bonds, property and other investments. Furthermore, blockchain networks can be used to document and move these digital rights of ownership.

Consequently, financial institutions are looking into tokenization to enable quicker and more agile transactions. But, awareness is still low even though there is a lot of interest in the industry.

The survey also revealed a similar lack of understanding of decentralized finance. Only about 92% of Americans said they were familiar with DeFi, a figure that is quite low. This encompasses 74% that knew nothing about it and 17% that knew very little.

Another Survey Shows Growing Interest in Tokenization

The Ipsos results contrast with another U.S. survey done earlier this year. A survey by HarrisX for the Coalition for Tokenized Markets revealed greater public awareness.

That survey revealed that 31% of Americans initially claimed to be aware of tokenization. In addition, the interest rate rose to 50% when researchers described the practical applications.

But the 2 surveys asked different questions and conducted the surveys differently. Ipsos measured high levels of familiarity, including those who knew the subject very well. Meanwhile, HarrisX used a wider definition of overall familiarity.

Thus, their findings do not necessarily reflect an actual shift in public awareness. Rather, they argue that the wording of questions can influence knowledge reporting.

Tokenized Assets Industry Faces an Education Challenge

The new results reveal a significant issue for the tokenization sector. Businesses need to clarify the connection between digital tokens and conventional monetary assets.

Furthermore, there must be clear information on ownership, safety and investment risks. Many potential users may not use them if they do not have basic knowledge.

The DeFi Education Fund is dedicated to policy and education on decentralized finance. The survey has drawn attention to the need for increased public awareness.

In the meantime, financial institutions are still looking into blockchain in traditional markets. As tokenized assets grow in number, public education may play an even more significant role.
