Telegram founder Pavel Durov made a big announcement this week. TON’s native token will be renamed to Gram in the TON ecosystem. The change will be made in about three weeks.
The wallet, app, and infrastructure providers will incrementally change the token name over this period. The name is stored on the blockchain. The Open Network (TON) remains unchanged. The name of the token is changed, but the name of the other tokens is not changed.
Why Did TON Decide to Rename Its Token to Gram?
The word Gram is not new. It starts from the project’s inception. In the initial whitepaper, the team named the native coin Gram, but later changed its name to Telegram.

So, the team is not developing something new. They are going back to the name they always planned to use. Durov called it a “return to the roots” and a “new chapter.
What Happened to the Original Gram Token?
Back in the day, Telegram was going to have its own blockchain. The team called the native token Gram. However, in 2020, the US Securities and Exchange Commission intervened. The SEC filed a lawsuit against Telegram for its token sale. Then, Telegram completely pulled out of the project.

The network continued to operate independently. The community changed the name of the token to Toncoin. Years later, the project is restoring the original name.

The announcement was made by Durov on his official Telegram channel on Monday. The native currency of TON is turning into Gram, he said. Further, he noted that Gram was the original name as mentioned in the first whitepaper. He described it as a step back to the project’s origins. He also added that the rebrand will pave the way for what’s next.
How Did the Market React to the Gram Announcement?
The traders reacted immediately and favorably. Toncoin jumped around 16 percent in the 24 hours after the announcement. The token is currently trading at around $2.18.
This price action is significant as the rest of the crypto market has been declining. The token has broken out of a falling price pattern and created a double bottom price structure. These are typically interpreted as positive signals for traders.
The price of the token is currently hovering around $2.18, and its market cap is approximately $5.8 billion, according to CoinGecko. Moreover, the trading volume in the market is approximately $538.4 million for 24 hours, indicating high trading activity in the market.

For regular users, not much changes right away. The blockchain technology remains unchanged. The TON name is stored in the network. Users only see a different label on their token.
Over the next few weeks, wallets and apps will start showing the new Gram name. The user is not required to take any action. Platforms will handle the update automatically.

This was not a mere name change for Durov. It will be a stepping stone to the future, he said. That suggests greater plans for the TON ecosystem in the future.
